People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (NKVD USSR, People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs) - the central body of state administration of the USSR for combating crime and maintaining public order, in 1934 - 1943 (with a break from February 3 to July 20, 1941) - also ensuring state security.
